Earth Day Pensacola 2005

Anyone driving a hybrid car to the Earth Day Celebration will receive preferred parking in the hybrid car area, shown on the map below.

hy·brid (hī'brĭd) - In Technology: Refers to a myriad of products that combine two or more different technologies.

What is a hybrid car? A hybrid car is so-named because it relies on dual power sources for providing mechanical energy to the car. It uses both the familiar fossil (gasoline) fueled internal combustion engine AND and an electric motor that runs from a battery that can be recharged. Currently the electric motor is not "plugged in" as we think of recharging (that is technology being worked on for true electric cars...)- the battery is constantly charged from the gas engine.

The current hybrids come in many varities, all based on the original theme - more or less - : electric cars with a gas engine onboard to generate charge for the batteries. On the original hybrids, when one is stopped in traffic, for example, the gas engine turns off and the car can be driven at low speeds on the electric motor alone. This gives the car the terrific 'fuel efficiency' that we hear about. But, on some of the earlier models, the car would stall at the slower, electric-only-driven modes. So, some variations have been made. Read all about the new hybrids here - and compare your current vehicle to a hybrid here!
